As Vice President of Marketing for AMD’s x86 Server processor business, my team depended on Dan to crystalize our value proposition and develop messaging and narratives that resonated with our end customers and sales teams.
Dan has an excellent feel for marketing, a great creative instinct, and a strong understanding of the technologies and markets making him particularly effective. I could always count on Dan to deliver quality material – even on a tight timeline. When presented with the proposition of overhauling our entire value proposition on a very short timeline leading up to a major launch, Dan rose to the challenge and, as always, delivered what the team needed.
Individuals like Dan are tough to find in the industry, and he will be an asset to any team he joins.
Dan worked for me for several years, and I have the utmost respect of Dan, his character, his work ethic, and his skillset. Dan has an unusually strong ability to take challenging, abstract issues and formulate a coherent, pragmatic solution for them.
While Dan is definitely strong in Analyst Relations and PR, I found Dan’s ability to help define a position and to translate that position into a story to be one of his strongest assets. I actually think Dan may be the best story teller I have worked with in my career. In addition, Dan’s ability to build strong relationships both internally and externally allows him to be very effective in his job.
I recommend Dan highly and without reservation.
Dan was my link to the PR/AR functions while in server marketing and he was always on top of his game. He was thorough and organized and always had a cool, calm disposition, regardless of how the events of the day were unfolding. It was great to travel with Dan because he did a great job of working with the local teams and his attention to detail helped drive highly productive visits.
Dan was an esteemed colleague that conducted his work with utmost professionalism and competency at AMD. He built excellent relationships with the analysts and delivered solid market intelligence to the executive team.
Dan is a true professional with great interpersonal skills.
He understands that successful Analyst Relations programs are focused on establishing trust and building lasting and mutually beneficial business relationships.
When I first met Dan, I was grateful for the time and patience that Dan had for me, as I probed and learned as much as I could about AMD. I would set some tall tasks for Dan in that I wanted to hear first hand from the executives – sometimes viewed as a project that could need a lot of tight control. Dan had a way of making the executives and me trust each other, that allowed everyone to benefit. To that end, Dan’s warm personality blended with a great understanding of the needs of all the interested parties, makes him a very reliable and action oriented contributor to any AR/PR program.
As a market research analyst for PC semiconductors, including microprocessors, I need to cover AMD and so I interacted with Dan a lot over many years. As AMD analyst relations manager, Dan was always loyal to AMD but balanced and professional in his approach, going out of his way to provide me relevant facts, not fluff, that I needed for analysis and to facilitate good relations with key AMD executives. He’s done PR and AR and knows the difference. I respect him a lot.
Dan the man. A get the job done guy. Always delivered what he promised. Liked by everyone he met.
Dan was an absolute joy to work with. He always got things taken care of on a timely basis and went out of his way to make sure individual analysts’ needs were met. I can highly recommend Dan.
I had the opportunity to work quite a bit with Dan over several years. He was always professional, helpful, and knowledgeable in all our interactions. Dan represented AMD very well in every situation and frankly was one of the best things about dealing with AMD as an analyst. I really look forward to working with him again.
Dan did great work with the analyst community, keeping us well informed about AMD, and helped us gain access to information where needed. Responsive and proactive, and knowledgeable and passionate about his company’s products.
Dan represents one of those few people who believe going that extra yard to do more than get the job done, who seek that level of excellence that define the best in their chosen field. It is a pleasure working with Dan and he has always been professional, capable, and incredibly reliable. Being able to depend on someone is critical to folks like me and Dan has proven to be someone I and others in my profession can depend on. This creates a bond between the analyst and the company that protects both from misunderstandings and public mistakes or embarrassments. I can say, without qualification, that Dan is actually one of the best in his field and that working with him has been one of the highlights of my job.
Dan is one of the best in the analyst relations business. In a field where a combination of persuasiveness and sensitivity must be balanced in managing both the analyst community and operating management, Dan has proved to be a past master. A classy guy, he can open the show with authority at a large scale analyst event and in the next breath be managing the delicate task of disseminating sensitive information through analyst and media channels. Dan listens well, but also expresses himself concisely. Over time, he has increased the importance of the analyst relations function at AMD, raising the visibility of the company in the analyst and media communities while bringing analysts further and further upstream in the company’s planning process. He has managed to build trust on both company and analyst sides to the mutual benefit of all. Thanks to him, analysts now have a critical role in helping guide AMD’s decision process. Dan has few peers in the analyst relations business. It is also, I have to say, a great pleasure working with him.
Dan Pickens is an excellent PR professional whom I’ve known for more than 15 years. He’s an excellent writer, has great interpersonal skills – everybody likes Dan – and is very quick to a solution to a communication problem. He is also very trustworthy. When something important needs to get done, Dan is the guy you want to call because he’ll get it done with fantastic results. Dan’s a strategic thinker and has a particular skill in analyst relations. I highly recommend Dan Pickens.
